Syllabus Bulletin - November 2024

We are seeking MRAIC and student volunteers to join the RAIC Syllabus National Advisory Committee (SNAC). If you know anyone who may be interested in this committee please direct them to the link below.  

The purpose of the Committee is to provide guidance with respect to the RAIC Syllabus program and its RAIC Professional Diploma in Architecture in conjunction with the RAIC operational team.  

The SNAC provides consultation and advice on the following aspects of the Syllabus program:  

• Long-term strategic planning 

• Policies, procedures, curriculum, course materials, and design studio guidelines 

• Final adjudication of appeals in design studio (academia only, and not human resources) 

Support the RAIC operational team in monitoring program content to ensure compliance with the Canadian Education Standard (CES)  

Duration of Term: 

Up to three (3) years (January 1, 2025 - December 31, 2027) - With the goal of balancing continuity and renewal, each new member will be asked to commit to a two- or three-year term.

Meetings: 4-6  times per year

This is a reminder to all students currently enrolled in studio for this term. All design documentation should be uploaded to Moodle by end of term (December 15). To upload design documentation:

1. Access Moodle through the student portal

2. Select the course you are currently enrolled in

3. Select 'Studio Design Documentation Submission'

4. Select 'add submission' and upload your documentation 

All Syllabus Students studying in Parts Two and Three of the Program are required to be working under the supervision of an architect licensed to practice in their CALA jurisdiction. All experience must be logged in Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB). 

Recently, CERB books submitted for review have demonstrated a lack of information about the student’s responsibilities for each project in each of the 17 categories of practice.  To ensure a thorough review, it is essential that the projects listed include a brief description of each, clearly outlining the student’s roles and contributions as they pertain to each category of practice. The provided template is designed to assist in documenting this experience comprehensively, offering valuable insights to students, supervisors, and mentors regarding the student’s progression towards becoming a licensed architect. Adhering to this level of detail in documentation is expected of Syllabus students. 

Students are required to submit their experience logs every 900-1000 hours, within eight weeks of the experience period. Submissions made after this deadline, or totaling over 1000 hours, will incur a late penalty of $110.25 per log.

Students approaching the end of their Part 1 studies, who have been accruing hours while working under a Canadian licensed architect, must submit their back entered hours immediately prior to starting Part 2. 

Reminder: Students may record up to seven continuous years of Canadian architectural experience accrued before  starting Part 2, and a maximum 4,900 hours can be back-entered as follows:  

• Part 2 - 2450 hours
• Part 3 - 2450 hours

All backlogged hours must be divided into 900-1000 hour logs.

Syllabus Program Application Deadline for Term 1, 2025 is December 15, 2024

Registration for Term 1, 2025 opens on December 15, 2024 and closes on January 31, 2025

Each design studio location will decide if the next term will be held in person or online. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to your studio coordinator(s). 

Annual Re-Enrollment Fee opens December 15, 2024 and closes January 31, 2025

Starting December 15, the annual re-enrollment fee will be added to your cart automatically at checkout when you register for a course. If you are not registering for Design Studio in Term 1, 2023, you can pay the annual re-enrollment fee on your account by clicking on "Courses and Registrations," and selecting continue at the bottom of the page.

*There will be a late fee added for any re-enrollment fees not received by February 1, 2025. Any re-enrollment fees not received by March 1 will be subject to an additional re-application fee of $385.88 Click here to see the fee schedule.

Athabasca registration

The registration deadline is the 10th of each month for history, theory, and technical courses with our educational service provider, Athabasca University. Courses will start on the 1st of the following month. 
 
Remember to register on the Syllabus Student Portal as well. Our systems are not linked with Athabasca University, so this does not register you twice or result in any fees. This simply allows us to maintain the student records and transcripts in our own system. 

Upon completing Athabasca courses, students can forward their Statement of Grades to the Syllabus office. However, official RAIC transcripts, certificates of completion, and diplomas will only be issued after receiving official AU Transcripts through the secure document sharing platform, MyCreds.
