Syllabus Bulletin - August 2024

We are looking forward to the start of the next term. In preparation for that, the RAIC Syllabus National Office will be hosting a welcome meeting open to everyone in the Syllabus community. This is an excellent networking opportunity where you will get the chance to talk to students from other studios.    

In addition, we welcome any ideas and questions that you would like discussed in the meeting. You may send your suggestions via email to info@raic-syllabus.ca

The meeting will be held Wednesday, August 21st at 6PM EST. The meeting is open to everyone. Pre-registration is required.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. If you have any questions, please submit them in advance via email to info@raic-syllabus.ca 

Term 2 begins on September 1. 

Each design studio location will determine exact schedules and start dates. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to your studio coordinator(s). 

Students entering Part 3 should begin to consider the topic of their thesis proposal and who they might invite to sit on their Thesis Review Committee. Before a student is eligible to register for RAIC690A, they must first:

• Assemble their review committee (with signed letters of agreement from each panel member); and
• Prepare a Thesis Proposal (document), which must be approved by the Review Committee and Syllabus national office.

The thesis proposal must demonstrate the student’s understanding of the topic and frame their thesis statement, proposed research,, and intentions of the design solution. This process is completed outside of studio courses and is expected to take approximately 6 months.

After the thesis proposal has been signed by the Review Committee, the document should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar at info@raic-syllabus.ca to be reviewed by the national office for approval to begin RAIC690A.  

Students will then register for studio every term until they complete their thesis project. For more information regarding the thesis process, please see “Thesis Proposal Webinar” and “Thesis Proposal Outline” here.  

This is a reminder for students currently enrolled in Parts 2 or 3 to continue to submit their CERB hours. Submissions should be made in 900-1000 hour logs. 

Students must submit experience logs within eight weeks of the end-date in the experience period. Submissions submitted after this time will be subject to a late penalty of $110.25 per log.

Students approaching the end of their Part 1 studies, who have been accruing hours while working under a Canadian licensed architect, must submit their back entered hours immediately prior to starting Part 2. 

Reminder: Students may record up to seven continuous years of Canadian architectural experience accrued before  starting Part 2, and a maximum 4,900 hours can be back-entered as follows:  

• Part 2 - 2450 hours
• Part 3 - 2450 hours

All backlogged hours must be divided into 900-1000 hour logs.

The RAIC recently announced the launch of a partnership with the National Research Council of Canada. This collaboration is focused on training the architectural community in whole building Life Cycle Assessment. There will be 9 workshops in total, with the first kicking off in Ottawa on September 20, 2024. Learn more and register today!

Athabasca registration

The registration deadline is the 10th of each month for history, theory, and technical courses with our educational service provider, Athabasca University. Courses will start on the 1st of the following month. 
 
Remember to register on the Syllabus Student Portal as well. Our systems are not linked with Athabasca University, so this does not register you twice or result in any fees. This simply allows us to maintain the student records and transcripts in our own system. 

Upon completing Athabasca courses, students can forward their Statement of Grades to the Syllabus office. However, official RAIC transcripts, certificates of completion, and diplomas will only be issued after receiving official AU Transcripts through the secure document sharing platform, MyCreds.
