Syllabus Bulletin - April 2026

The OAA Scholarship for Exceptional Leadership through Design Excellence is a national award recognizing an active RAIC Syllabus student whose work demonstrates leadership through Sustainability / Climate Action, Truth and Reconciliation, or Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). 
 
Valued at $2,000, the scholarship reflects the OAA’s commitment to supporting emerging professionals and advancing design excellence grounded in social and environmental responsibility. We extend our sincere thanks to the Ontario Association of Architects for their leadership and generosity in establishing this new award.   

Students are advised that Athabasca University (AU) will soon be reducing the duration of the following History, Theory, and Technical courses. For all students who register to begin on May 1, 2026 or later, the course must be completed within four months.  

This change has been implemented by Athabasca University to better align course structures with financial aid and scholarship eligibility requirements. Under the previous structure, some students experienced challenges applying for government funding, loans, or scholarship support. By shortening the duration of these courses, Athabasca is aiming to reduce funding barriers and support improved access to financial assistance. 

The affected History, Theory, Technical courses are: 

• ARCH 653: Contemporary Architectural Theory & Research 

• APST 505: Advanced Structures 

• APST 555: Architectural Design: Lighting 

• APST 605: Architectural Design: Acoustics  

• APST 655: Whole Systems Design 

• PPRC 651: Architectural Practice Management 

Students in Part 2 of the Syllabus Program must manually register for APST 505: Advanced Structures and ARCH 653: Contemporary Architectural Theory and Research through Athabasca University’s Faculty of Science and Technology graduate program office. Steps to manually register for APST 505 and ARCH 653:  

1. Request a Letter of Enrollment by contacting info@raic-syllabus.ca. 
2. Send the signed Letter of Enrollment to fst_grad_success@athabascau.ca and request assistance with course registration.

All Syllabus students enrolled in Parts 2 and 3 of the Program must work under the supervision of an architect licensed to practice in their applicable ROAC jurisdiction. All professional experience must be recorded in the Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB).     

Submission Requirements 

Students are required to submit CERB experience logs after every 900-1,000 hours of experience. Submissions received more than eight weeks after completion or exceeding 1,000 hours are subject to a late processing fee of $115.76 per log.     

If students need an extension to submit their CERB Logs without penalty, they must submit a request to info@raic-syllabus.ca within 8-weeks of the end date in the experience period. This request must include:

1. Experience period
2. Number of accrued hours
3. Reason for extension
4. Date CERBs can be submitted

We do not guarantee extensions will be granted for the full requested period.

Students approaching the end of their Part 1 studies, who have been accruing hours while working under a Canadian-licensed architect, must submit their back-entered hours immediately prior to starting Part 2.  

Reminder: Students may record up to seven consecutive years of Canadian architectural experience accrued before starting Part 2, with a maximum 4,900 hours eligible for back-entry, divided as follows:   

• Part 2: 2,450 hours 

• Part 3: 2,450 hours 

All back-entered hours must be divided into logs of 900–1,000 hours each.

Athabasca registration

The registration deadline is the 10th of each month for history, theory, and technical courses with our educational service provider, Athabasca University. Courses begin on the 1st of the following month.  
  
Remember to register on the Syllabus Student Portal as well. Our systems are not linked with Athabasca University, so this does not register you twice or result in additional fees. This step allows us to maintain student records and transcripts within the Syllabus system.  

Upon completing Athabasca courses, students should forward their Statement of Grades to the Syllabus office. However, official RAIC transcripts, certificates of completion, and diplomas will only be issued once official Athabasca University transcripts have been received through MyCreds, the secure document-sharing platform.
