Syllabus Bulletin - April 2025

We want to hear from you. The RAIC Syllabus Student and Volunteer Surveys are open now to April 27, 2025. This is your chance to share your insights and experiences. 

Your feedback will directly influence the RAIC National Office and the Syllabus National Advisory Committee (SNAC) as we review the program and allocate resources to better support your success. 

As students and volunteers, you know this program best. What works? What could be better? This is your opportunity to highlight what makes the Syllabus program great and suggest improvements that will enhance learning, mentorship, and overall experience.

Student Progress Reports

To support students in their personal journey through the RAIC Syllabus program, we are excited to introduce Student Progress Reports (SPRs). SPRs will serve as a one-on-one point of contact between Syllabus head office and students about your personal journey through the program.

They provide a comprehensive overview of your academic and work experience records as well as important program information. 

The RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture is taking place June 1 to 4, 2025 in-person at the Hotel Bonaventure Montréal, QC.

The program includes high-quality learning opportunities that include interactive content, innovative ideas, and engaging discussions. Participants at all career levels are expected to take away insights, inspiration, and ideas for practical application.

As the RAIC’s premiere face-to-face event, this year’s conference will be drawing industry leaders from all realms of the design and architecture community. With our commitment to empower Canada’s architectural community we have developed a program that feeds directly into our goal of providing the tools, educational opportunities and practice supports to advance a built environment that is more livable and sustainable.

This endowment fund was established in honour of Kiyoshi Matsuzaki FRAIC, 1943- 2012.  It awards the annual Kiyoshi Matsuzaki RAIC Scholarship to a student enrolled in the RAIC Syllabus Program. The Scholarship advances Kiyoshi Matsuzaki's personal belief in the future of the profession of architecture and his unyielding support of the new generation of students, the next leaders of our profession. 

This award is open to Syllabus students in good standing who have completed a minimum 50% of the program. 

Each application/ submission must include the following material:

• Submission form
• Academic transcript
• Curriculum Vitae / biography (max. 2 pages)
• Letters of support (minimum 1, maximum 3)
• A one-page statement by the applicant outlining why their application should be considered for the Scholarship
• Examples of academic and/or employed work (maximum three pages)
• A completed image index, providing captions and full credit information for each image, if applicable.

The Canada Green Building Council’s mission is to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live, work and play by engaging a national coalition of industry leaders to accelerate the mainstream adoption of green building principles, policies, practices, standards and tools. The CAGBC Scholarship was established to promote and encourage sustainable research and design in Canadian Schools of Architecture. 

This award is open to Syllabus students who were active during the calendar years 2024 & 2025.

This annual award, established in 2021 in partnership with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Foundation (RAICF), was created in recognition of Richard Moorhouse for his leadership as the Founding President of The Arts and Letters Club of Toronto Foundation (ALCT Foundation), and former Chair of the National Trust for Canada and in appreciation of his life-long contributions, both as a professional and as a volunteer, to the field of heritage conservation.

The award embodies the RAICF’s commitment to deserving students by promoting excellence and providing financial support to those whose demonstrated commitment is to pursue a career in architectural conservation.  The award also supports the ALCT Foundation mandate to advance education by providing scholarships, bursaries and awards to Canadian residents for demonstrated excellence in the arts.

The recipient of this award shall demonstrate to the jury that he or she is the most deserving based upon academic achievement, and studio and work experience.

Each application/ submission must include the following material:

• Submission form
• Curriculum vitae/resume (max 1 page) highlighting the applicant’s architectural conservation projects
• Applicant’s statement (max. 3 pages) outlining how their work will contribute to the field of architectural conservation
• Letters of support (max. 2); if a student applicant, at least one letter from a faculty member at their School of Architecture.  If a graduate and part of a team project, then at least one letter from their supervisor, a licensed team architect.
• 100-word abstract summarizing the submission, to be used for possible promotional and / or marketing purposes.
• A completed image index, providing captions and full credit information for each image, if applicable.

This competition is open to all Syllabus Students.

The Canadian Architecture Student Association (CASA-ACÉA) would like to celebrate the excellence of our architecture students. CASA-ACÉA is calling for work to be showcased at the 2025 RAIC Conference this June in Montreal to continue our efforts to profile student work to potential employers, colleagues, and the public.

Projects must be completed as part of school curricula and be the original work of the student(s). Individual and group work is accepted, provided all group members are clearly stated. Only one submission will be accepted per group or individual. All projects must have been completed between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024.

All Syllabus Students studying in Parts Two and Three of the Program are required to be working under the supervision of an architect licensed to practice in their ROAC jurisdiction. All experience must be logged in Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB). 

Students are required to submit their experience logs every 900-1000 hours, within eight weeks of the experience period. Submissions made after this deadline, or totaling over 1000 hours, will incur a late penalty of $110.25 per log. 

Students should round their hours to the closest quarter of an hour (ie. in 15 minute intervals) on page 4 of the CERB Log. 

For further information on CERB submissions, please refer to the Architectural Experience Manual. 

Students approaching the end of their Part 1 studies, who have been accruing hours while working under a Canadian licensed architect, must submit their back entered hours immediately prior to starting Part 2. 

Reminder: Students may record up to seven continuous years of Canadian architectural experience accrued before  starting Part 2, and a maximum 4,900 hours can be back-entered as follows:  

• Part 2 - 2450 hours
• Part 3 - 2450 hours

All backlogged hours must be divided into 900-1000 hour logs.

Athabasca registration

The registration deadline is the 10th of each month for history, theory, and technical courses with our educational service provider, Athabasca University. Courses will start on the 1st of the following month. 
 
Remember to register on the Syllabus Student Portal as well. Our systems are not linked with Athabasca University, so this does not register you twice or result in any fees. This simply allows us to maintain the student records and transcripts in our own system. 

Upon completing Athabasca courses, students can forward their Statement of Grades to the Syllabus office. However, official RAIC transcripts, certificates of completion, and diplomas will only be issued after receiving official AU Transcripts through the secure document sharing platform, MyCreds.
